I have a new appreciation Margaery’s first gown and hair style. Sure her new style is beautiful but you have to remember them man she is involved with in relation to these choices.
Exposing her skin only made Renly uncomfortable. Everyone knew Renly was gay, but Renly wasn’t out. And it can be argued that the reminder of his responsibilities as a king, having sex with his wife to have a legitimate heir, made him uncomfortable. And his inability to perform made him feel emasculated (she should have gone for a gay Tully, at least he would have done his duty). So Margaery covers herself so much so that you can barely discern her figure. Her hair style is simple. Boring. But how will she obtain power if her husband won’t sleep with her, if she can’t use her body? She will gain his trust by being honest. In private, she calmly tells him she knows he is gay and has been sleeping with her brother. But she reaffirms his right to do as he pleases, because he is king. She does not speak in public, so as not to appear the dominant partner. In public he must be the man. No one from his banners or her family’s will ever comment on his sexuality. Highgarden is basically known for being courteous and discussing sexuality is not something you do. Everyone may know but you leave it alone so long as your duty is done and you keep up appearances. Margaery begins to establish trust in her marriage by being accepting of Renly’s sexuality and being frank about their need for an heir to secure his claim to the throne. If she can’t be in his bed she will be his friend. A close friend who will always tell him the truth of his situation, give him what he needs/wants and will never leave his side. With his trust and Loras’s loyalty she would have maintained control of the realm. She would have been most secure and it would have been a peaceful reign after the war.
But with Joffrey it’s different. He is, from what I can tell, a heterosexual teenager. And he was raised as a prince and coddled by his mother. Here Margaery could not simply be obedient, Cersei oscillates between this and being a controlling parent with him already. And her relationship with Joffrey becomes volatile from this. So Margaery must differentiate herself from the Queen Regent. She becomes the beautiful girl from Highgarden who has the potential to be just the kind of women he would not fear or disrespect. She has a wonderful body that she is comfortable exposing, so she isn’t shy and maybe when he is ready for sex ( after marriage) she will be open to his tastes ( beating women). She gives Joffrey a taste of what could be. And when he no longer sees her as a threat, when he doesn’t disrespect her, then she will have control. It will be precarious and she may have to do horrible things to always be in his good graces, she may have to let horrible things happen, but this is what she is willing to do for her family. Using her body, beauty & graces to steal the king’s confidence and trust. Planting these seeds so that she & her family may grow strong. It is the hardest thing she will ever have to do for her family, being Joff’s wife. If her intelligence is perceived to be a threat in Joff’s eyes he may have her beaten, because this is all he knows having become a monster. But she has been trained for court. She can be a sweet, beautiful, obedient monster for him. For respect. Because his respect in court will give her immense power.
Soon we will see what her family is willing to do for her.
